Connecting Bluesky

How to connect a Bluesky account with an app password, and what Bluesky lets Social Studio post.

Updated

Bluesky is the one network that can publish from Social Studio today. You connect it with an app password generated in Bluesky's own settings, which is exchanged for a session server-side and never stored as typed.

Once connected, posts you schedule to that account publish automatically like any other scheduled post.

BEFORE YOU START

  • A Bluesky account, and an app password created in Bluesky's settings. Do not use your main account password.
  • The "connect" permission in Social Studio.
  • Room under your plan's connected-account allowance. Preview includes none, so you need at least a trial or a paid plan.
  • Connecting costs no credits.

STEPS

  1. In Bluesky, open your settings and generate an app password. Copy it; it looks like four groups of four characters separated by hyphens.
  2. In Social Studio, open Publish and choose "Connections", or go to /app/connectors.
  3. Find the "Connect Bluesky" card on the right. If it is not there, Bluesky is not showing as live on this deployment and there is nothing to fill in.
  4. Type your handle into "Handle", in the form you.bsky.social.
  5. Paste the app password into "App password".
  6. Choose "Connect Bluesky".
  7. Confirm the account appears in "Connected accounts" with a state of "Connected" before you schedule anything to it.

WHAT YOU SHOULD SEE

The account listed under "Connected accounts", its state reading "Connected", and the "Health" panel counting it as publish-ready.

WHAT THIS WILL NOT DO

  • Bluesky posts are capped at 300 characters. A longer post is refused at publish time with a message telling you the length and the limit, rather than being truncated.
  • Up to four images per post, each under about 976 KB, as JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF.
  • Video is not supported. Bluesky uploads video through a separate service Social Studio does not drive, so video is declared unsupported rather than silently dropped.

IF IT DOES NOT WORK

  • "Bluesky rejected those credentials. Use an app password from your Bluesky settings." means the handle or the password is wrong, or you used your account password instead of an app password.
  • "This Bluesky connection is no longer authorised. Reconnect the account to publish." means the app password was revoked in Bluesky, or the session can no longer be renewed. Generate a new app password and connect again.
  • "Bluesky account is not connected (no session)." means the same thing at publish time.
  • "This post is N characters; Bluesky allows at most 300." means shorten the post.
  • "An approved image could not be read for publishing." means the attached media is not available. Check the asset is still there and approved.
  • Plan-cap and permission messages are covered in the connections overview guide.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Is my app password stored?

It is exchanged for a session server-side. Nothing renders it back to you, and no token or secret reaches the Connections page.

How long does a session last?

Roughly two hours, and it is renewed automatically. If renewal stops working the account moves to a state that says it needs reconnecting rather than failing silently.

Can I revoke access from Bluesky?

Yes. Revoking the app password in Bluesky stops publishing immediately, and the account will show as needing reconnection.
