Following a render

The renders page, what each render state means, and the rule that a render is charged only when a provider produced something.

The renders page lists every video, voiceover and transcription render your organisation has asked for, with the state each one reached and what was tried. A render is charged only once a provider has actually produced something; anything that fails, is cancelled or times out returns its credits.

The page also says which states cannot be reached at all on this deployment, rather than listing every state as though any of them might happen.

BEFORE YOU START

  • The "view" or "generate" permission to read the list. Cancelling and retrying need "generate".
  • Nothing else. Reading the list costs nothing.

STEPS

  1. Open Create and choose "Renders", or go to /app/renders.
  2. Use the filter to narrow to All, Running, Ready or Needs attention. "Needs attention" covers failed, blocked, no provider active and timed out.
  3. Open a row and choose "Show what was tried" to see the evidence behind it.
  4. Use "Retry" on a render that can be retried, or "Cancel" on one still running.
  5. Read the "What each render state means" legend at the foot of the page. States that cannot happen on this deployment are marked "cannot happen yet".

WHAT YOU SHOULD SEE

Each render with a state and a plain sentence. The ten states are Waiting to start, Preparing, Rendering, Partly finished, Ready, Failed, Cancelled, No provider active, Not permitted and Timed out.

WHAT THIS WILL NOT DO

  • It will not charge you for a render that never ran. No provider means no reservation.
  • It will not overcharge you. Settlement is capped at the estimate even if a provider reports using more.
  • It will not show you progress for a render that terminated immediately. A render refused for want of a provider stops before it starts, so there is nothing to watch and nothing arrives later.
  • On a deployment with no active provider, only three states are reachable at all: waiting to start, not permitted, and no provider active. The page says so rather than implying the others might occur.

IF IT DOES NOT WORK

  • "No provider is active for this kind of render yet, so it could not run. No credits were charged." is the standing answer for composition renders, and for transcription on every deployment.
  • "Rendering failed. Your project has been kept as it was." means the reservation was released.
  • "Cancelled. Any credits reserved for this render were returned."
  • "This render took too long and was stopped. No credits were charged."
  • "This render was not permitted by your organisation's controls." means the action gate refused it.
  • A refused retry returns the reason the render cannot be retried. Not every state is retryable.
  • "Render job not found." means the job belongs to another organisation or has been removed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Why is transcription always unavailable?

Because this build contains no transcription integration at all. That is not a configuration gap and no setting changes it.

What is the difference between "Failed" and "No provider active"?

"Failed" means a provider was asked and something went wrong. "No provider active" means nothing was asked, because there was nothing to ask.

Can I retry a render that had no provider?

Yes, it is retryable. It will answer the same way until the deployment activates one.
