Rendering a composition

What submitting a cut version does, why every deployment currently answers "no provider active", and what that costs.

Rendering a composition submits a cut version to a video compositor to be turned into a finished file for one delivery profile. Submitting is a render job, and the result is followed on the renders page.

No deployment currently has an active compositor. A submission is therefore recorded honestly, terminates immediately with "No provider is active for this kind of render yet", and charges nothing at all - not even a reservation.

BEFORE YOU START

  • A video project with a cut composition version. A project with no version cut cannot be submitted.
  • The "generate" permission.
  • A compositor activated on this deployment, and a credit tariff set for it. Both are deliberate operator decisions and neither ships switched on.
  • Nothing else. There is no credential to obtain: a compositor does not have one.

STEPS

  1. Open the video project's composition editor and go to the render panel.
  2. Use "Ask the server again whether a compositor is available" if the panel is stale. The answer comes from the server, never from a stored flag.
  3. Pick the "Version to render", then "What this render is", then "What the finished video is for".
  4. Read the facts table headed "What a submission would name": the version, the document hash, the delivery profile and the voices frozen into the cut. That is exactly what would be sent.
  5. Choose "Render this version".
  6. Follow the job on the renders page.

WHAT YOU SHOULD SEE

On a deployment with no compositor, which is every deployment today, the job comes back already finished with the state "No provider active" and the message "No provider is active for this kind of render yet, so it could not run. No credits were charged." Nothing is queued, so nothing appears to be in progress and nothing will arrive later.

WHAT THIS WILL NOT DO

  • It will not charge you. The provider check runs before any reservation is taken, so a render that could never run costs nothing.
  • It will not be fixed by adding a credential. There is no credential in the gap. What is unset is an operator's activation decision and an owner's per-second price. Describing it as a missing key sends people to a screen that cannot help them.
  • It will not follow the job for you from the editor. That panel reads the server's answer to the submission once. Silence there means no evidence is carried on that page, never that nothing was attempted.
  • A refused render is not a failure to retry blindly. It is retryable, and it will answer the same way until the deployment changes.

IF IT DOES NOT WORK

  • "No provider is active for this kind of render yet, so it could not run. No credits were charged." is the standing answer today.
  • "Not built into this deployment" means there is no compositor in this build at all, and no setting changes that.
  • "Registered, and reported as unable to run" means a compositor is present and one of its conditions is unmet. The report does not say which.
  • "The cost of this render could not be estimated." means the compositor is active but has no price set. That refusal also happens before anything is reserved.
  • "This render was not permitted by your organisation's controls." means the action gate refused it.
  • "This render cannot satisfy the requirements of the platforms it is aimed at." means the cut does not fit a delivery profile you named. Only a hard block refuses; warnings and unknowns are reported and never refuse.
  • "A cloned voice needs a stated purpose so its consent can be checked." means the voice used in the cut needs a recorded purpose before it can be rendered.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Who can turn the compositor on?

Only easyOS staff, through the Provider Centre, and only after a real verification and an explicit production enable. No organisation role can do it.

Why is there no price?

Because nobody has decided what a second of compositing should cost, and seeding a number would be inventing a price. A deployment with no tariff quotes zero, and a zero quote is refused rather than treated as free.

Can I still work on videos?

Yes. Planning projects, building rails and cutting versions all work, and cutting a version is exactly what a compositor would be handed.
