Adding and managing brands
How to create a brand, what your plan allows, and why the brand count on the page can differ from the number you can see.
Updated
A brand is the unit everything else hangs off: it owns a Brand Brain, and it is what generated content is written for. The Brands page creates them, shows which ones have a Brand Brain written, and tracks how many your plan allows.
How many brands you get is a plan limit, and it is enforced when you try to create one rather than afterwards.
BEFORE YOU START
- You must be an organisation administrator to create a brand. Members with a seat can see the brands they can reach but cannot add one.
- Your plan must have a brand allowance left. The included counts are one on Preview, one on Starter, three on Growth, ten on Scale and twenty on Agency.
- Brands live inside workspaces. You only see brands in workspaces you can reach, so the list may be shorter than the organisation's real brand count.
- Creating a brand costs no credits.
STEPS
- Open Library and choose "Brands", or go to /app/brands.
- Check the "Brands" card. The meter shows how many of your plan's brands are in use and how many are left.
- In "Add a brand", type the name in "Brand name" and choose "Create brand". If no workspace exists yet, one called Main is created for you.
- The new brand appears in the list with a "Brand Brain not written yet" chip. Choose "Open Brand Brain" on it and write its voice.
- Use the "Brand setup" panel on the right to see what is still outstanding. It tracks three things: Business DNA written, at least one brand created, and every visible brand having a Brand Brain.
WHAT YOU SHOULD SEE
The brand in the list, the usage meter one higher, and the setup panel moving from "To do" to "Done" for "At least one brand created".
WHAT THIS WILL NOT DO
- It does not read your website or social profiles to work out your brand voice. The page says so directly, in the card headed "Learn from your website": Social Studio does not read your website or social profiles to infer a brand voice. Nothing about your voice is inferred anywhere in the product.
- It does not rename or delete a brand. There is no rename and no delete control on this page.
- The "brand setup" count is not a health score. "2 of 3 done" is a count of three specific things, not a rating of how good your brand setup is.
IF IT DOES NOT WORK
- "Your plan includes up to N brand(s). Upgrade to add more." means the allowance is used up. Nothing you already have is affected; you simply cannot add another until the plan changes.
- "Administer permission required." means you are not an organisation administrator. The page also says this in plain words: only an organisation admin can add a brand.
- The list is empty but the meter says brands are in use: the organisation has brands, but none in a workspace you can reach. Ask an administrator for workspace access. The page shows this as "None in a workspace you can reach".
- "Could not create the brand." is the general fallback; check the meter and your role first.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Why do the two brand numbers disagree?
On purpose. The list shows what you can reach; the meter shows what the organisation is using against its plan. For someone working across an agency's workspaces those are genuinely different numbers, and showing only one of them would mislead.
Do I need one brand per client?
That is the usual shape, because a Brand Brain is per brand and clients rarely share a voice. Check your plan's brand allowance before committing to it.
Does turning off or removing a brand free up an allowance slot?
There is no control here to remove one, so the allowance only changes when your plan does.
