Writing your Business DNA

The eight facts about your business that generation is allowed to cite, and how saving a new version works.

Updated

Business DNA is the verified truth about your organisation: eight fields covering what you do, what you sell, what makes you different and what you may legally claim. Generation cites what is written here and does not invent facts to fill a gap, so an empty Business DNA produces vaguer copy rather than confident nonsense.

Every save creates a new immutable version rather than overwriting the last one, so you can always tell which version a piece of content was grounded in.

BEFORE YOU START

  • You need to be an active member of the organisation, and you need the "edit" permission to save. Anyone with a seat can open the page and read it.
  • Business DNA is organisation-wide. It is not per brand and not per workspace, so what you write applies to everything the organisation generates.
  • It costs no credits, needs no connected channel and needs no AI provider.
  • Have your real claims to hand. The "Proof points" field is for verifiable facts only; putting an unverified claim here is how it ends up in published copy.

STEPS

  1. Open Settings and choose "Business DNA", or go to /app/business-dna.
  2. Fill in "Mission" and "What we do" first. These two carry most of the weight in a draft, and they are the ones a reader of your copy would notice missing.
  3. Fill in "Products and services" and "Differentiators". Write what a customer can actually buy and what genuinely sets you apart, not aspirations.
  4. Fill in "Proof points" with facts you could defend: awards, certifications, measured results, years in business. Leave it empty rather than filling it with something you cannot back up.
  5. Fill in "Markets", "Compliance constraints" and "Website". Compliance constraints is where regulated claims, prohibited wording and industry rules go.
  6. Choose "Save new version".

WHAT YOU SHOULD SEE

A confirmation reading "Saved as version 1." (or the next number up), and the version counter in the page intro moves with it. Fields you left blank are simply not stored for that version rather than being stored as empty.

WHAT THIS WILL NOT DO

  • It does not scan your website, and typing a website address does not import anything from it. The address is stored as a fact, nothing more.
  • It does not delete or edit a previous version. Versions are immutable and append-only, and there is no version list or restore button on this page today. If you save something wrong, save a corrected version on top of it.
  • It does not enforce your compliance constraints by itself. Wording that must be blocked belongs in your Brand Brain's claim rules, quoted exactly, and even there only quoted phrases are automatically blocked.

IF IT DOES NOT WORK

  • "Edit permission required." means your role can read Business DNA but not write it. Ask an administrator to change your role, or to make the edit.
  • "Could not save. Check your permissions and retry." is the page's general fallback and usually means the same thing.
  • "The request did not complete, so it is not known whether this version was saved." means exactly that. Reload the page and read the current version number before saving again, so you do not create a duplicate version.
  • If two people save for the first time at the same moment, one save fails outright rather than quietly winning. Reload and save again.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Do I have to fill in all eight fields?

No. Blank fields are stripped before saving. A short, true Business DNA is more useful than a complete, padded one.

Will editing this change content that already exists?

No. Existing drafts and published posts are unaffected. The new version applies to generations made after it.

Is this the same as a Brand Brain?

No. Business DNA is what is true about the business and is organisation-wide. A Brand Brain is how one brand sounds, and there is one per brand.
